Ukraine: the grid, not the front line, is the decisive winter target

Two winters of strikes taught both sides which nodes matter. High-voltage autotransformers are the chokepoint: long lead times, few domestic spares, and a small number of substations carry disproportionate load. A campaign that concentrates there imposes rolling outages faster than one spread across generation.

The defensive story is often told as interceptor supply. That matters, but the sharper metric is the ratio of damaged high-voltage transformers to available replacements. When that ratio crosses roughly two-to-one, repair timelines lengthen non-linearly and outages compound.

We hold this at critical with fairly high confidence: the target logic is well-established, the seasonal timing is near-certain, and the constraint is a countable inventory rather than an intention.
