Taiwan Strait: a customs quarantine is the likelier coercion than a blockade

The debate over a Taiwan contingency fixates on invasion. The nearer-term instrument is coercion below that line. A quarantine framed as a law-enforcement 'customs' action lets Beijing choose the intensity, control escalation, and split allied responses, while denying Taipei a clean casus for invoking mutual-defense expectations.

Three things would move this from elevated to severe: a surge in coast-guard rather than navy tasking around Kinmen and Matsu, insurance underwriters repricing hull-and-cargo for Strait transits, and a rehearsal of ration-and-fuel continuity by Taiwan's cabinet. The first two are observable in commercial data before any political signal.

We hold confidence at moderate. The pathway is coherent and supported by recent coast-guard patterns, but timing inside two quarters is a genuine coin-toss and the analysis rests partly on intent we cannot directly observe.
